One of the elements necessary for a person to be really productive is the sense of motivation. Without it, people will eventually tend to lose energy and the will to do something that need to be done. Motivation is all in the head and is not like a virus that is easy to catch. Often people need someone else to give them a pep talk to keep on going.
But what do you do when the cheering squad do not seem to be working its powers on you? Well, you then have to start learning how to motivate yourself. As in life, there will always be things that are hard and you may not want to do but nevertheless have to be done. Or else, you’ll suffer the terrible consequences. Here are tips on how to keep yourself going until the goal is finally met.
1. Determine the purpose
The end will justify the means in this case so better resolve to determine what will an exercise achieve. Ask yourself why are you doing it in the first place? Why do you want to work another job? To make ends meet? To boost your career? Keep that goal which compelled you to decide to do that project in the first place in your mind. Make it your mantra, telling yourself that this is merely part of the process and the end will be all worth it.
2. Weigh it down
When things become too daunting, it may be wise to stop and reflect whether the task is really worth pursuing. As you may be fooled by your emotions such as taking guitar lessons merely to impress a girl. Realize what might happen when you have indeed learned how to play a song and that girl remained hostile to you. Will the hours spent really be worth it? Sometimes, we may be blinded with emotions that we only see the good possibility when there are obviously plenty of scenarios that may result.
So consider this fact as you may need to adjust your actions. Perhaps you need not take guitar lessons and need to spend your energy improving your personality instead. Think of the alternatives that will still take you to that end and you will be more productive. You may still not end up with the girl of your dreams, but with a better personality, other girls may just see you as the man of their dreams. Making all the time and effort you spent more worthwhile and beneficial.
3. Don’t over analyze
Do not paralyze yourself by over thinking the whys and exaggerating the possibilities. When you know in your heart that something is worth pursuing, then just do it. Otherwise you will be wasting time just sitting down and drowning on all the information you can possibly get.
And with the iInternet and easy access to data, the tendency is very real. So why not just ask you boss for a raise? You need not have all data handy proving you are more valuable now than 5 years ago. At least the boss knows that you are wanting one now and he may just crunch the numbers later to give you a fair share. And that act is better than keeping silent and spending hours writing down a justification of why you need to get more than you are paid.
4. Set mini-milestones and celebrate
Tell yourself that doing the task diligently for a month deserves a reward. And do so every month to help you look for forward to something that is within arm’s reach. Achieving a task or a goal may take a while so celebrating mini milestones will keep you on track and hopefully give you a new dose of energy and motivation you need to keep on moving.
Likewise, you must determine the consequences of not reaching a milestone. Say being unable to go to the gym at least 3 times a week for a month will entail a compulsory gym session every weekend. This negative reinforcement should motivate you to keep tab on your discipline and will power. You can also apply this to simple projects such as spring cleaning your home. Break it down to say one room at a time then get a rest or spend time relaxing with your TV shows before going to the next room. And before you realize it, your home will be sparkling clean and organized.
So try these tricks to keep you motivated on finishing that job. And make it a habit so you will have no problem facing whatever challenges life throws at you.
