2. WHAT? An excerpt from a booklet I wrote to help high achievers excel, stay on track, and consistently deliver high performance.
3. ROLE / JOB FUNCTION Will your company, client, or customer have to throw at least 3 people at your role / job function to replace what you do? (if you answer no, your role may be too dispensable.)
4. PERFORMANCE METRICS Can your performance be measured in a 2 : 1 (Quantitative : Qualitative) metric? (if you answer no, your value may be too ambiguous.)
5. SPHERE OF INFLUENCE Can you name at least 5 people in the organization who can benefit from your expertise or experience? (if you answer no, your scope of contribution may be too limited.)
6. MANAGING UP Can you clearly explain your boss’ or client’s definition of “a good job” from you? (if you answer no, your results may be irrelevant.)
7. PERSONAL BRANDING Is your self-description congruent with how your colleagues and customers describe you? (if you answer no, your intentions may be misinterpreted.)
8. LEADING & FOLLOWING Do you know under which circumstances you best lead, and under which you best follow? (if you answer no, your efforts may be thwarted.)
9. SYSTEM OF SUCCESS Do you know how to create and reproduce the actions and behaviors for you to succeed? (if you answer no, your future may be too random.)
10. WHY? When you are “kicking ass” doing what you do, you can spend less time “kissing ass” to stay alive in your industry. Talk to me about this? jane@janechin.com
Very thought-provoking, as usual. I especially like the “Managing Up” section about how your boss sees you.
It’s natural to get tunnel-visioned and I sometimes lose objectivity. Thanks for the refreshing questions.
